I was hanging out with a few 10 year olds over the weekend
at the Cape. One of the young
girls happened to mention that her Aunt, a girl-next-door women, is married to
a famous singer (name not revealed), and I went on to rave about how much I “loved”
this band when I was young and how they made a recent comeback, etc.
My remark was simple and made sense to me: Its a small world.
She looked at me and said, “well, actually Kelly, it’s a really
big world.” At 10 years old, she
took my comment quite literally and I forgot that I was not speaking to an
adult who may take my words as I had intended them: Its a small world (the interconnectedness of people).
This 10-year old girl is right. It is a vast, large,
expansive, and BIG world. She said
“Kelly, there are so many towns, and cities, and rivers, and mountains, and….” We
got really into talking about the many natural and incredible wonders of this
World.
Taking this phrase more literally made me stop and think
about many small pieces of the world we adults may neglect to consider. There is beauty
all over us, down to the cup of tea we drink in the morning, and the flower
that we miss as we drive down the same street everyday, to the rivers and the
oceans that sustain economies.
It is a HUGE world.
Maybe someday that 10-year old will understand the “other”
interpretation I had intended, but that day she gets credit for giving me a very valuable
reminder.
