Great, thought provoking comments precede mine. And it's a good thing. I'm not capable of much deep thought.

I was thinking that Nietzsche might have simply meant, "Don't worry, be happy...or not. Who cares? It doesn't matter anyway."

I used to be a fan of this philosopher, and he did indeed help me examine the 'why' of my attachments, but I've moved on from nihilism as a workable approach to life. I've witnessed too much evidence in my experience in life of 'higher' things - God, love, grace and mercy. So while I don't have absolute evidence or understanding of life's complete meaning, I have faith that it can be discovered. And that it's a worthy search to embark upon.

Kelly, thanks for putting this quote out there for us to ponder. As always, your blog is fun and thought-provoking.

Perhaps what Nietzsche meant is that life is empty and meaningless in its basic form...such as a tree alone in a forest or a single flower in the desert. If it weren't for the incredible fact that our conscious minds are capable understanding this basic emptiness then we would be left with an unknowing complete silence because there would be no "forms" able to comprehend the understanding and definition regarding the existence of life. Our brains...or spirit...or whatever gift it is we have...enables us with the ability to comprehend and understand this emptiness which allows us to fill the void...with thoughts and actions...and then we give it meaning!.....Just because life is empty and meaningless does not mean,at least to me, that it must remain in this state.

"Nietzsche's words, 'He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how'

Nietzsche said many things -not clear he thought life was empty to all but probably to many

Many philosophers have said that they would despair if life had no meaning. Nietzsche basically responds "What's the point?" If life has no meaning, then there is no reason to despair, or not to despair. Fully realizing this might be a key to becoming free. So, is nihilism another (western) path to samadhi? Hmmm....
